The objective of the Village Development Cell at Handique Girls’ College is to engage the college community in outreach programs and, most importantly, to provide students with opportunities for community service during their academic journey. The cell also aims to empower village women by organizing training sessions in skills like tailoring, weaving, and food preparation, such as making pickles and cakes.
Additionally, the cell promotes good practices in health and education for villagers and organizes health camps in the community. The college also raises awareness about social issues, including drug abuse, AIDS, and witchcraft, through rallies. Furthermore, the cell collaborates with government bodies and NGOs to enhance the effectiveness of its development efforts.
On 28.03.2023 the college adopted Bor Amudpur village situated near Bhagabatipara(Rampur) and an Memorandum of Understanding was signed to work for next 5 years. There are around 64 families in the village. Earlier most of the families engaged in agriculture, but now a day many of them are associated with small local businesses and few of them are also in service. Most women are housewives and many of them are experts in weaving. They are also interested in tailoring, but do not have proper facilities like tailoring machines. There is only one Lower Primary School, but recently due to less number of students, the school has been merged with a neighboring school. The village does not have library, but there is one community hall and one Anganbadi Kendra.
The college donated 20 chairs to the adopted village. The students undertook plantation drive in the village. They oraganised art competition amongst the students and taught dance to the children.
On 19/04/202 the faculties of the college organised a demonstration programme before the villagers on the preparation of nutritious foods for the children The students also organised rally against the alcohol in the village.
On the college organised a free health camp in the village. The camp was organised in collaboration of Guwahati based private hospital, the Down Town Hospital.
The College also signed an agreement with FICCI FLO, a division of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) for the cause of development of the village. With the help of it the college donated two sewing machines to the village on 7.8.2023.
Moreover, the college the college also donated one computer set and yarn for loom to the villagers of our adopted village Bor Amudpur. Principal Dr. Ranjit Sarma and IQAC Coordinator Dr. Pori Hiloidari handed over those items to the residents of the village in the college campus. It was decided that an instructor would be given the responsibility to teach tailoring to the village women for three months. The instructor was given remuneration by the FICCI on behalf of the college.
On 27.03.2024 the college donated 5 pairs of desks and benches to the adopted village. The villagers needed them for their club. Sri Rupen Kalita and Sri Bipul Kalita of the village collected them from the college campus. The NSS volunteers and the Convener of Village Development Cell handed over these to the villagers.
