PHYSICS

 

 

The Department of Physics was set up in 1965, with a single faculty member, offering Pre-University (PU) programme under Gauhati University - the PU course is equivalent to present day Higher Secondary course. The Department introduced two year Degree course in 1972, with only one student. In 1979 Honours Course was introduced by the Department with five students. The first batch of Physics Honours students appeared in the Final Examination under Gauhati University in 1982, with one student securing first class. Till 2022 altogether 40 batches of students have graduated from this Department, with a large number obtaining first class, and some going for higher studies abroad. Moreover, the Department has given one Principal to the College.

The Department has 3 well-equipped laboratories including a computer laboratory. It also has a well equipped library with over 300 books.

Presently the Department has 66 students offering Major/Honours in the subject. At present the Department has 6 faculty members, all with PhD degree. So far 2 faculty members of the Department have been awarded patents for their inventions, and two faculty members of the Department are carrying out research with funding from DST-SERB and DBT, Govt. of India.
