The Department of Community Science (Erstwhile Home Science) of Handique Girls´ College, strives to inculcate a culture of professionalism, self-reliance and independence among the young generation of women who inevitably represent a sizeable chunk of the future citizens of our country. Given that they are likely to playasignificant role in the future affairs of their respective families, society and thereby the country at large,this department steadfastly endeavors to prepare them for theirprospective roles in asound and befitting manner. The changing social needs and existing realities of present day society demand that the students are well versedin their respective areas of expertise and are thoroughly trained to be absorbed as professionals in their desired field of choice. The Department of Community Science therefore seeks to successfully groom the students by imparting credible theoretical and practical knowledge and help them to develop into conscious, qualified and empowered individuals with the right combination of knowledge, skills and attitude.
The Department of Home Science is committed towards the holistic development of students through the inclusion of scientific knowledge, practical skills and field experience so as to prepare them to become qualified professionals equipped with the relevant skill sets.
The Department of Community Science (erstwhile Home Science) was established in the year 1962 at the initiative of Lt. Rajabala Das, Founder-Principal of Handique Girls, College. The roots got strengthened further when Mrs. Vimla Rao, the Founder-Head of this department, successfully introduced Home Science as an elective subject for the three-year degree course in 1963. The major course was initiated in 1993 under the headship and persistent efforts of Dr. Alaka Bhattacharya.The other luminaries who molded this department are Ms. Rama Rao, Dr.Labanya Mazumdar, Dr. Malaya Madhuri Bora Dr. Santana Kakati, Lt. Dr. Manjoo Goswami Mishra, Dr. Jayashree Sarmah Goswami. At present there are six faculties, Dr. Meenakshi Dutta Mazumdar(HOD), Dr. Shabnam Hazarika, Ms. Hoitinkim Singson, Dr. Jitumoni Neog, Dr. Anuradha Mahapatra, Ms. Kalyani Deka and Ms. Nilakshi Bhagawati catering to a strength of around 250 students.Two of our students earned the laurel of Best Graduate under Gauhati University, Deepa Subramanium and Vandana Jain in 1996 and 2003 respectively.
