Dept. of English was established in 1939 as one of the founding Departments of the institution. The Department takes pride in inheriting the rich legacy of teaching left behind by prominent Assamese academicians and litterateurs such as Hem Barua, Chandra Prasad Saikia, Golokeswar Barua as its former faculty members. The commitment of the faculty members and brilliance of the students are reflected in the excellent academic performance of the students with more than 95% pass percentage and a considerable number of first class holders in the final examination. Two annual awards, namely, Golokeswar Barua Award and Nirmala Neog Award were instituted by the Department to encourage the best graduate of the Department each year. Moreover, the students of the Department bring accolades with their academic as well as non academic performances outside the college campus.
There are nine regular faculty members in the Department. All are engaged in different types of academic, extra-curricular and administrative tasks of the college besides offering their best in the classroom. To orient the students towards self-directed learning, the faculty members engage them in experiential learning, collaborative learning, peer learning, and performative learning, etc. The Department organizes Meet the Author sessions, Book Club discussions, quiz competitions, educational trips and invited lectures on subjects of interdisciplinary nature to give the students exposure to the recent developments in literature and other disciplines. In 2023, the Department has been granted permission to introduce P G courses in English. The Department also offers a certificate course on Theatre and Performance. Furthermore, the Department has its own library to facilitate the students with additional learning resources.
Department has a departmental library. It is equipped with more than 600 books with some expensive reference books.
The department has a desktop computer, a laptop, internet facilities and a classroom of its own equipped with LCD projector.
Some regular features of the department are- Wall magazines and bulletin boards by the students, Webinars and "meet the author" programmes with eminent writers, talks by invited academician etc.
