PROFILE

Handique Girls" College, one of the premier institution for women education of North-East India was established in 1939 in Guwahati. Department of Assamese is also inseparable part of the institution from the day of its establishment. Rajabala Das was the founder Head of the department of Assamese. This department was also headed by PreetiBaruah, The Sahitya Academy award winner and many other famous academicians. The Names of the some other past faculty members are Professor BinayBhushan Choudhury, Professor GiridharSarma, Dr. Hari Chandra Bhattacharya, Mrs. Chandra Prabha Choudhury, Dr.Manjumala Das, Dr. Anjali Sarma, Mrs. Deepanjali Das, Mrs. MahashwetaAcharyya and Dr.Kanak Ch. Saharia.

 

Department of Assamese has one seminar library . At present the library is equipped with about one thousand valuable books and journals. The library has the concept of book banks where students are issued books for the courses. The library has extensive collection to support both recommended and background reading.

 

Department of Assamese has also a club related to literature and culture namely "Sahitya-Sanskriti-Chora", which was established in the year 1983 . This club regularly organizes annual lecture program and many other academic activities. An annual journal namely "Uttaran" is also regularly published by this club where students of the department can publish their writings.

 

Department has capacity to enrol60 students per semester in UG major course and 20 students per semester in PG course under Gauhati University.

 

Presently The Department is serving by six full-time faculty members. They are Mrs. Manimaya Bordoloi, Mrs. Manjyotshna Mahanta Goswami, Dr Lakshi Hazarika, Mrs. Karabi Basumatary, Dr.Subhashree Kalita Talukdar and Mrs. Surabhi Bikash Borah.

 

Department of Assamese is proud of it"s alumni, most of them are now taking leading role in the society. Some of the famed alumni are Late. Dr . Nirmal Prabha Bardoloi, Dr. Anima Datta Bharali, Late Prabina Saikia, Dr.Lutfa Hanum Selima Begum, Mrs. Anupama Basumatary, Mrs. Manjyotshna Mahanta Goswami etc.

LIBRARY

The Departmental Library has a collection of above 500 books and journals, which support both recommended and additional reading. The library provides reference and lending facilities to students and teachers.

 

COMPUTERS

The Department has one computer assigned for its use.

The Department maintains a museum of items representing the history and culture of Assam.
